Happy Pi Day

Did you know...

  • Pi is  the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.
  • William Jones, in 1706, first gave the Greek letter “pi” its current mathematical definition.
  • The earliest known reference to pi in history is on an Egyptian papyrus scroll, written approx. 1650 BC by Ahmes the Scribe.
  • Pi's digits never repeat themselves in a pattern.
  • The current world record for memorization of the decimal places of pi is Chao Lu from China with 67,890 digits on November 20, 2005. (really????)
  • It took  a supercomputer 29 hours to calculate pi to 51.5 billion digits, in 1997.
