Saccharin was discovered because Constantin Fahlberg didn't wash his hands when he came home for dinner. In 1879 Fahlberg was trying to come up with a use for coal tar and while eating a roll noticed it tasted sweet. He realized that the sweet taste came from his unwashed hands covered with coal tar.
